National Theatre is a screen print on paper featuring a layer of metallic ink. The building is reimagined as though cast in iron and placed against a theatrical chequered floor, referencing its function as a performance space.
Built between 1969 and 1976 by architects Denys Lasdun and Peter Softley, the National Theatre is defined by its large concrete terraces and monumental scale. Up close, the concrete retains marks from the rough timber formwork used during construction. These details inspired me to explore the building’s cast qualities and transform its material appearance within the print.
Although its architecture can divide opinion, the National Theatre is one of my favourite places on the south side of the river. By presenting the building as both architecture and sculpture, the print draws attention to its physical presence in the urban landscape and the close relationship between its structure, materials and theatrical purpose.
