Description

This piece, titled TTC (Toronto Transit Commission), is a screen print composed from layered fragments of the city. Three key elements of Toronto’s urban fabric are represented: the streetcar rails embedded in the pavement, the vertical rhythm of skyscrapers, and the distinct yellow hand straps that swing inside TTC subway cars.

The layered planes mirror how we navigate the city; rails underfoot, handles at hand, and buildings rising overhead. The subway straps serve as a visual hinge, binding these separate elements into a single composition, much like the TTC itself connects diverse neighbourhoods across Toronto.

Public transit, in this sense, becomes more than a means of movement; it is a shared space where strangers briefly converge, following the same rhythm and routine. In a city defined by constant transformation, these fleeting encounters embody the quiet continuity of urban life.

Through its layered construction and the interplay between abstraction and representation, TTC reflects on the tension between movement and stillness, individuality and connection, that defines the experience of living in a modern metropolis. The print captures the visual and emotional rhythm of Toronto; its infrastructures, repetitions, and small moments of human convergence, suggesting that beneath its constant motion lies a sense of collective belonging and everyday continuity.
